Waste Management has an exciting opportunity for a summer intern. We are looking for an intern to work in our communications group from May through August.

I. Job Summary

Intern will report to and work with the Greater Mid-Atlantic Area’s (GMA) communications manager and interact with colleagues across the Area’s various lines of business, and outside stakeholders, in support of the Area’s internal and external communications activities and strategies. This intern will gain practical experience relevant to their field of study.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, the GMA Communications Intern must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily:

  • Use problem solving skills, determines problems, and understand fundamental parts of the problem.
  • Conduct analysis as directed, and prepare and deliver insight and recommendations based on analysis.
  • Synthesize findings and draw conclusions from analyses and make oral/written recommendations to supervisor and/or manager.
  • Executes task directly related to functional projects and/or process improvements.
  • Communicate issues and roadblocks related to areas of responsibility.

IV. Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Interns must have a High school diploma or GED (accredited) and be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (accredited) in Communications, Public Relations, English or a field of study relevant to the internship. Successful candidate must demonstrate that they have completed at least 60 hours of undergraduate coursework
  • Familiarity with social media, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Constant Contact, will be essential to supporting the GMA’s outreach to various audiences and helping the GMA build its presence on social media platforms
  • Experience: No prior work experience required

B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Current valid drivers' license

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Successful candidate must be able to write quickly and accurately, synthesizing ideas and information into copy that will be posted on social media or prepared for internal and external audiences
  • A general familiarity with the three branches of government, the legislative process, current events and the environmental will be helpful

Normal setting for this job is: office setting. The position will be based in Northeast Pennsylvania and the value this internship will provide to the successful candidate will directly correspond to the candidate’s initiative, creativity and desire to learn. An ability to travel to locations within the GMA where community relations strategies are supporting key project development will be helpful. This travel would be limited.

This is a full time paid internship for the summer. The pay rate is $15.00 per hour.
