Job Description

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks several dynamic and energetic camp counselors to work our seven weeks of summer camp programming. This position will deliver energetic live science programming to our campers; know and understand emergency procedures associated with the camp program; plan and implement ice breakers and games; and communicate with parents about participants’ experiences. Counselors will be responsible for the safety and well-being of our campers ensuring they have a positive camp experience. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

This is a physically demanding position requiring standing for long periods of time and lifting up to 50 pounds. This is a temporary 7 week position, Monday – Friday, from June 25-August 10. Candidates must have complete availability on weekdays. This is a temporary seasonal position, no state benefits are provided.

Minimum Qualifications

Desirable candidates should be energetic, outgoing, and have a genuine appreciation of working with children in an educational environment; have the ability to be a self-starter and work successfully with little supervision; the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with staff; and the ability to effectively present content in both one-on-one and group situations in an engaging way. Science “expertise” is not required, but willingness to learn is. The successful candidate will also demonstrate effective problem solving skills, patience and flexibility.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in theater, teaching or public speaking; experience working with children of various ages in a camp setting; BS/BA degree (or in progress), from an accredited college or university with coursework in science or education and/or experience in K-12 education. Previous experience delivering educational programs in informal and/or formal settings preferred. Museum experience a plus.
