University of Notre Dame Summer AmeriCorps position (Quarter-Time) with the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture (NDCAC) in Notre Dame, Indiana
The NDCAC offers summer arts camps for middle school students. Camp sessions will be June 19-June 30 and July 10-July 21. Camp will be held weekdays from 9am-12pm. At camp, children explore world cultures using various mediums, such as painting, drawing, photography, and creative writing. The summer culminates with the annual Block Party, “Treasure Hunt North,” on Saturday, July 22, 2018.
AmeriCorps Position Summary The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for helping to develop and implement NDCAC summer arts camps, as well as assisting with the “Treasure Hunt North” Block Party.
Assist with planning and coordination of summer camp activities. This may include: working with NDCAC staff to develop and implement curriculum, leading activities with children, making arrangements for field trips, recruiting volunteers to assist, greeting children and parents at the beginning and end of the day, and maintaining records.
Assist with planning and implementation of the NDCAC Block Party on July 21, 2018. This may include: developing activities, gathering supplies and resources, communicating with parents, meeting with NDCAC partners, creating promotional materials, and helping where needed on the day of the event.
Document program activities through photographs and text, and submit information to the RCLC/NDCAC web sites and Facebook pages.
Attend orientation and training, as well as summer staff and team meetings at the RCLC.
AmeriCorps is a national service organization aimed at helping communities meet needs in areas including education by building the capacity of community organizations. This is a service position, rather than traditional “jobs”. A quarter-time AmeriCorps member is expected to complete 450 hours during the summer. On completion of those 450 hours, the member will receive an education award.
Quarter-Time AmeriCorps members will be compensated as follows: Living Allowance: $1500 (paid out in equal installments twice a month) Education Award: $1538 (on completion of 450 service hours)
High school diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or a lawful permanent resident alien.
Reliable transportation is a plus.
Additional Qualifications include:
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Interest in education, working with at-risk youth, and community development.
Public speaking and the ability to teach/train others.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and some on-line systems.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Flexibility to work in a variety of settings.
Sensitivity, compassion, and listening skills required to work with a diverse audience including: RCLC staff, volunteers, fellow AmeriCorps members, Notre Dame and community partners, RCLC participants (ranging in age from early childhood through senior citizens), neighborhood residents, and families of youth participants.
