You will be joining the Future Experience (FX) Team at HARMAN. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers. We are located in Mountain View, California, minutes away from Google, Samsung, the NASA campus, and many others right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Reporting directly to the CTO of Harman, the team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on Future User Experiences (UX) and Artificial Intelligence, connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping. This internship is about UX testing and validating several of the FX Team’s future technologies from their portfolio, focusing on the automotive subset. You will be enabling the continuation of these projects through working with the FX Team to design and execute the appropriate studies to quantitatively test as many relevant aspects of their technologies as is feasible during the scope of your internship. In addition, you’ll take usage datasets gathered from our systems and apply modern analysis methods to generate meaningful insights from the data.
Preliminary research and evaluation of the current problem and solution space surrounding HMI within a vehicle
Work closely with the FX Team to propose and execute research activities to measure, validate, and improve the team’s systems and technologies
Leverage modern quantitative UX analysis methods (including regression, statistical tests, machine learning, etc.) to generate insights on data gathered from FX systems
Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program in Sophomore year or later, or graduate/Ph.D. program at an accredited institution taking at least one class in the semester prior to the internship program and returning to school for at least one semester upon completion of the internship program
Degree must be in related area of work with courses in Computer Science, Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or any related field
Experience in UX benchmarking, statistical analysis, test method selection
Experience with end-to-end research: plan and field research activities, analyze the results, share concrete insights
Previous entry level work experience strongly preferred
Must have strong oral and written communication skills and be able to confidently interact and present information to senior leaders
Must work collaboratively with strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
Must provide work availability from May 31, 2018 - August 12, 2018 and be able to work 40 hours per week
Strongly prefer candidates who live within a commutable distance
Must provide own housing and transportation to/from work
Must provide proper work authorization
Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:
Graduate level research in one or more domains relevant to this project or, in lieu of graduate level research, significant course-related project experience with direct overlap with the proposed internship project.
Experience with a relevant programming language (e.g. Python, R, Matlab)
Experience with handling, formatting and processing large amounts of data using various storage forms, e.g., filesystem, document-oriented and relational databases
Experience with planning, design, execution and evaluation of controlled usability studies
Experience with machine learning and statistical evaluation techniques
