Degree and area of specialization:

Minimum of M.A. required, ABD preferred, in fields related to Brazilian Portuguese language and culture.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Three years of college/university experience preferred in teaching Brazilian Portuguese as a second language at the elementary, intermediate, or advanced level in the U.S. or abroad. Familiarity with current issues in language pedagogy and prior experience in intensive summer language teaching preferred.

Position Summary:

The Summer Intensive Portuguese Institute (SIPI) is an eight-week intensive language institute that offers Portuguese 301 and 302 from mid-June through mid-August. The 2018 SIPI program will be held from June 18 through August 12 and will be preceded by a staff orientation week from June 11-15, 2018.

The Portuguese 302 language instructor will be responsible for participating in orientation activities as well as instructor meetings throughout five-weeks of the eight-week program, starting on July 9 and ending on August 12, 2018. Under the supervision of the program, the 302 instructor will prepare appropriate materials and deliver instruction in their assigned classes, hold office hours, and participate in teacher meetings. This appointment includes a one-week overlap with Portuguese 301.

This appointment is for summer 2018 only. There is no presumption of reappointment.

Hiring of instructors is contingent upon sufficient enrollment.

A successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring eligibility for employment in the United States on or before the effective date of the appointment. International applicants should be advised that the US government has established new English language proficiency requirements for J-1 visa applications. If you did not obtain a degree from an institution where instruction occurred in English you will be asked to submit a qualifying TOEFL/IELTS score from within the past 5 years or other accepted proof of English proficiency before we can start your visa application. We may also request a Skype video interview to verify your proficiency.

The salary listed ($29,500) is the minimum base rate on which the instructor's salary for the summer session would be calculated. The actual compensation for this five-week appointment would start around $4097 before tax, depending on qualifications. Please note that instructor salaries will be taxed, the amount of which varies based on the allowances claimed by the employee.
