ABOUT TRIO UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
The North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded program for low-income, first-generation, and/or academically at-risk high school students. The primary mission of the TRIO programs is to increase the rate at which participants complete their secondary school education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. The UB program is a year-round program that provides academic and extracurricular services including academic year and summer instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.
ABOUT UB SUMMER ACADEMY
The annual UB Summer Academy is a six-week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences for high school students. The Academy serves approximately 46 students from the Lynn Public Schools. The Academy is staffed by four Instructors, four Learning Leaders, two Community Team Leaders, and two Program Assistants who work with the full-time program staff to provide an intensive six-week academic experience. The Summer Academy includes a four-week day program at North Shore Community College's Lynn Campus (M-F) and a two-week residential component at UMass Amherst (M-F and weekends).
The UB Summer Academy Community Team Leaders coordinate the activities of the Learning Leaders and work in conjunction with the full-time staff to support the program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate the work of the Learning Leaders, including scheduling, activity planning, monitoring of UB and College policies, and residence hall duty coverage;
Ensure that Learning Leaders incorporate the annual program theme into co-curricular and recreational activities and workshops. This year's theme is "Technology";
Completes activity and student evaluations, documents incidents, and maintains files;
Participates in workshops and daily meetings related to high school students' social and academic development, and contributes to student plans of action;
Monitors student behavior during academic and extracurricular activities and field trips for compliance with Upward Bound and college regulations;
Participates in afternoon study halls and facilitates afternoon and evening workshops;
Coordinates staff and student check-in and checkout, keys/key cards, and paperwork, etc. for the residential component at UMass Amherst;
Creates schedules for floor duty and building supervision during the residential component;
Responsible for sharing of front desk coverage and monitoring the residence hall floors during residential component;
Facilitates daily announcements;
Monitors afternoon trips to the recreational center during the residential component and monitors student meals;
Oversees sick day contracts, including distribution of missed meals (during the residential component) and homework collection with the Learning Leaders;
Assists with residence hall set up and cleanup during the beginning and the end of the program.
Attend mandatory staff training and orientation at NSCC and at the residential site;
Attends daily meetings with Programming Coordinator and participates in group staff, student, and program meetings;
Shared responsibility for dormitory supervision of project participants during the residential summer component at UMass Amherst.
Supervision: Reports to the Special Program Coordinator
Completion of at least two years of college and current enrollment in an undergraduate program;
At least 21 years of age at the start of the program;
At least one year of Resident Assistant or related Residence Life experience;
Previous mentoring and/or tutoring experience;
Demonstrated sensitivity towards and passion and commitment to working with students and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different levels of academic preparation, or/and varying physical and learning abilities; prior experience preferred;
Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable;
Demonstrated ability to act as a team player;
Availability to complete mandatory staff training prior to the start of summer component;
Ability to provide own transportation to and from residential site Amherst;
Documented CPR and/or First Aid certification preferred;
Bi-lingual (Spanish, French, Khmer) preferred.
Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI background check as a condition of employment.
SALARY:Total earnings for this position are $2,773.50 at $18.49/hour. Benefits also include room and board (3 meals/day) during the residential portion of the program at UMass Amherst, admission and transportation to all activities and events, and access to free wifi.
Thursday, June 21 and Friday, June 22: 2-day mandatory staff training and prep at NSCC's Lynn Campus
Monday, June 25-July 19 (off July 4): 4-week day program in session at NSCC's Lynn Campus
Friday, July 20, Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22: 3-day staff training at UMass Amherst
Sunday, July 22- Saturday, August 4: 2-week residential program in session at UMass Amherst including a debriefing meeting on August 4 to evaluate and assess summer outcomes.
