ICF , in support of the National Library of Medicine's Disaster Information Management Research Center (DIMRC, https://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov/ ), is looking for students to help DIMRC develop 3D simulations using Virtual Reality and computer game technologies for applications related to disaster management training and environmental health education. The work will involve developing and testing, under DIMRC staff direction, 3D digital models that will be used in the simulations as well as designing and programming multi-player simulations using Unity 3D. Students will benefit from expanding their knowledge of computer gaming technologies, developing an understanding of disaster response resources of DIMRC, and gaining experience in the use of virtual reality technologies for instructional purposes, as well gaining experience working as part of a research and development team in a federal government environment.
Ideal candidates for this summer opportunity are undergraduate college students majoring in computer science, digital design, or an equivalent major. Students must have good communications skills and the ability to actively participate in project meetings and present about their internship work to small audiences. Students should have either:
Experience building 3D digital models/assets that can be used in Unity 3D ( www.unity3d.com at http://www.unity3d.com/ ) applications. This includes experience such as rigging clothes to humanoid avatars. Some 3D animation experience is a plus; and/or
Experience programming interactive applications or computer games with Unity 3D (C-sharp).
Students must be available to work on-site at the NLM office in Bethesda, Maryland (6707 Democracy Boulevard) for approximately 10-12 weeks (June-August) during the summer of 2018. Limited telecommuting or remote work may be acceptable. The number of work hours per week is negotiable, but can range from 16 to 40 hours per week.
NLM will provide students with access to the technical tools needed to carry out the activities on-site.
