Jewish Community Center Village Program Specialist (SUMMER ONLY) in Beachwood, Ohio

Principal Responsibilities:

A programmer position encompasses both programmatic and camper care responsibilities. In addition to serving as a cabin counselor, the programmer has significant responsibilities related to village and all camp programming, as well as the staff social experience. Beyond supporting their cabin of campers, a programmer's primary responsibility is to support staff in the development of strong village programs, management of the village program planning process, smooth facilitation of programming, and the development of systems to incorporate feedback and evaluation on programs to continuously improve them. In addition, a programmer has the privilege of organizing staff programs, which can be social, appreciative, enriching, and fun in nature. Programmers serve as a mentor, coach, and teacher to campers and staff, and are responsible for the physical, social, and emotional health, safety, and well-being of campers.


  • Model the expectations staff set for each other and our campers
  • Participate in and facilitate required staff training prior to camp and staff meetings
  • Serve as a live-in**caretaker and counselor for 10-14 campers
  • Know where campers are and need to be at all times-- making sure they are on time to meals and programs
  • Create a cabin culture that feels unique through care, special cabin activities, rituals, and traditions
  • Have an intimate knowledge of and take responsibility for each individual camper's social, physical, and emotional health, safety, and well-being
  • Encourage and support each camper in meeting their goals as related to their personal development
  • Manage camper behaviors using positive behavior management techniques, enforce appropriate safety policies, emergency procedures, and camp rules
  • Communicate, share responsibilities with, and work as a team with your co-staff
  • Train and mentor the Staff-In-Training who are a part of your cabin
  • Contribute to and participate in all camp activities (swimming is mandatory) as well as camp-wide community rituals, traditions, programs
  • Responsible for supporting the daily routine for campers, including planning activities, and implementing programs for campers in the cabin, village, or entire camp community
  • Create session schedule of evening programs and Saturday activities that aligns with camp-wide program calendar
  • Teach staff how to plan enriching, effective, inclusive, and fun programs for campers using specific planning outlines, timelines, supply request forms, and systems
  • Supervise the village programming process from start to finish: manage and support staff in developing programs on a timeline, manage the planning process including supply requests, ensure smooth facilitation of programs, and develop systems of receiving program feedback and evaluation
  • Coordinate and deliver fun, engaging staff programs (as approved by senior leadership team)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Camp Director and Assistant Director

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years old by June 1st and have experience working with children ages 6-15
  • Must be caring, empathetic, patient, hard working, and diligent professional who exhibits sound judgment
  • Must take initiative and be creative, enthusiastic, open-minded and high-energy
  • Must have demonstrated experience in program planning and facilitation
  • Must possess strong communication skills and comfort in communicating with children and peers **
  • Must have ability to function both independently and as part of a team
  • Previous experience in a camp or similar setting preferred**
  • Must be available for full training and summer: June 1 - August 1**
  • Must be high-energy, enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded!**
