What is the Opportunity?

SMBC hosts a eight-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students where they have the opportunity to work on teams and be exposed to significant Bank projects within their respective business units where they can support a range of deals with our clients. Participants will also be able to join internal bank-wide events, which will include learning from senior managers across different business areas. Our Interns will meet and interact with current analysts as well as with a cross-section of Bank managers and staff. At the conclusion of the program, participants will be required to prepare a final case study, which they will present to senior management.

Our Summer Intern Program is an excellent gateway to our full-time Analyst Program.

How the Program Works

Highlights include:

  • Hear from senior and junior-level employees about their careers at SMBC

  • Gain an understanding of our individual business and banking areas through our Kaizen Series

  • Visit Bloomberg offices for behind-the-scenes tour and hand-on training with dedicated research analysts

  • Network with current analysts at SMBC during team trivia night

  • Volunteer with your fellow interns on a special project

  • Participate in a Q&A panel on future opportunities at the Bank with current analysts

  • Prepare and deliver final case study

The Real Estate Department manages the Americas Division real estate finance business throughout North and South America with a focus on commercial real estate, gaming, hospitality and private equity fund finance. Typically, a Lead Arranger and Administrative Agent, READ operates an origination and distribution platform. 

This opportunity will give interns the chance to gain exposure and insight into three of the departments participating groups: 

  • The Commercial Real Estate Group provides financing to Real Estate Investment Trusts, project-level and portfolio loans and Real Estate Operating Companies. This group will engage with all types of asset classes including, office, retail, commercial/industrial and mixed-use, in major cities in the United States and Canada. 

  • The Leisure, Gaming & Hospitality Group focuses on gaming and hospitality financing. The team works with market leaders to provide clients with debt capital for acquisitions, corporate working capital and project finance, with a focus on integrated resorts. Additionally, this group partners with some of the world’s leading hospitality brands by providing term loans, revolvers, and construction loans.  

  • Subscription Secured Financing Department ("SSFD") at SMBC is a global leader, providing credit facilities to private equity firms across multiple asset classes, including but not limited to, real estate, energy, infrastructure, leveraged buyout and distressed debt. SSFD is a global platform with clients in North and South America, Japan, Europe, Asia, the Persian Gulf and Australia.
