Interns will obtain a broad overview of NiSources operations and current events in the utilities industry.Opportunities are available in the following business disciplines:Accounting DepartmentThe intern will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment performing functions such as accounting and financial analysis, preparing journal entries, reviewing financial statements, preparing account reconciliations, accounting research, external reporting and Sarbanes - Oxley control testing.Tax DepartmentThe intern will provide tax accounting, compliance, research and planning services to all NiSource business units. Interns will assist with the annual preparation of Federal, state and local corporate income tax returns, and will be involved in researching new tax developments and may assist in strategic and financial tax planning.Financial Planning DepartmentThe intern will gain hands-on experience in performing functions such as building long range financial plans, budget to actual analysis, preparing capital expenditure and/or operating expense forecasts, developing variance analysis and producing monthly and quarterly management reports. Internal AuditInterns in the Internal Audit Department will gain an understanding of risk assessment techniques, audit methodologies, and data analysis by assisting in the performance of internal reviews across all NiSource business units. Interns will be exposed to the following types of audits: Financial, Operational, Compliance (SEC and Regulatory), Process Improvement Reviews, and Control Testing. RegulatoryThe intern will support regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations. Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents; Appreciates the application of the regulatory construct to our business.Quality Control and Performance ManagementThe intern will compile, organize and format data, including qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting. Identifies and researches reporting issues, and provides accurate recommendations, assists with the adoption of new reporting requirements.Demonstrates a working knowledge of metrics and measures. Understands and utilizes economic and industry data as it relates to job responsibilities. Consolidation Accounting/Business Applications/Sarbanes-OxleyThe intern will have a rotation between the three departments. They will gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment performing functions such as accounting and financial analysis, preparing journal entries, reviewing financial statements, preparing account reconciliations, accounting research, external reporting and Sarbanes - Oxley control testing. Finance Business Applications is responsible for sustaining, enhancing and providing project support for financial applications. Area roles include significant partnership, collaboration, and inclusion in a matrix environment with IT.
Required for Selection:
Currently enrolled in an accredited university with major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related business discipline
Completion of intermediate-level coursework
Preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher
Strong financial acumen and analytical ability
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in MS Excel and Word
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
